AGC/AGS Series Water Resources Circular
Number Series WRC-7
Title Ground-Water Potential of Mississippi County, Arkansas
Author (s) R.W. Tyling
Date 1960
General Description

This report presents the findings of a study concerned with determining what water-bearing formations are present in Mississippi County, including thickness and lateral extent, depths below land surface, respective water levels, ability to yield water to wells, the chemical quality of water, extent of utilization, and the areas of substantial recharge to deposits of Quaternary age.

It includes:

  • A series of climatological data tables
  • A stratigraphic chart of the major divisions of geologic time and rock units present in the subsurface in the study area
  • A discussion of the geology and water-bearing properties of the rocks in the study area
  • Two cross sections utilizing both electric and lithology logs
  • Map showing the altitude of the Tertiary-Quaternary erosion surface in the study area
  • Map showing general distribution and lithology of surficial deposits in the study area
  • Map showing 14 west to east cross sections in the surficial deposits in the study area
  • Table of water levels in the Claiborne group and Wilcox formation in the study area
  • Fold out maps displaying, for the time period from September 1955 to June 1956, configuration of the water table in Mississippi County and displaying depth to water below land surface in the Quaternary deposits
  • Water level fluctuation charts
  • Map showing the location of selected wells in the Quaternary and Tertiary deposits and in rocks of Paleozoic age
  • Table containing the record of 199 wells in Mississippi County, including the following data: location, owner, driller, collar elevation, type of well, diameter, stratigraphic unit, depth to water from surface, date of measurement, type of pump, well yield, use, and remarks
  • Discussion of 14 community water supplies
  • Chemical quality of ground water, including typical ground water elements and chemical properties
  • Table displaying the variation of chemical quality of water sampled from various water-bearing units in the study area
  • Bar diagram displaying chemical characteristics of ground water from several aquifers
  • Map displaying generalized geographical distribution of iron content and water hardness in samples from Quaternary deposits collected in the summer and fall of 1956
  • Three tables of chemical analyses of well water in Mississippi County
  • Map showing wells sampled in Quaternary deposits for the study of iron and hardness
  • Six graphs depicting various chemical and water properties in relation to depth of sampling
  • Lithologic logs of 60 test holes and 31 wells in the study area
