Title Water Quality and Quantity in Abandoned Underground Coal Mines of West-CentralArkansas and Use of Surface Electrical Resistivity in Attempting Quality Determinations
Author (s) R.R. Potts
Date 1987
General Description

This report is concerned with both the quality and quantity of water in abandoned underground coal mines in the Arkansas Valley region of Arkansas. The quality of water in 20 sites studied was highly variable with sulfate, calcium, sodium, and magnesium being the major constituents. Multiple sampling of some sites was conducted. Dissolved solids and pH were also parameters that were checked. Total water in the abandoned mines is estimated. Resistivity surveys were tried, but not effective, in differentiating water quality in the mines from the adjacent unmined subsurface.

It includes:

  • Map of the sampling sites
  • Table of average value of contituents in ground water and selected physical properties of Pennsylvanian rocks in west-central Arkansas
  • Table of mine water sampling locations
  • Table of quality of water in abandoned underground coal mines and adjacent domestic wells
  • Table of estimated void space in selected underground mines

*Includes: 35 pages, 8 figures, 7 tables
